Definition Health’s groundbreaking research into sustainable healthcare and risk-stratification to be showcased at international orthopaedic conferences

Definition Health is thrilled to announce that two collaborative research studies, conducted in partnership with University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust, have been selected for presentation at two of the most prestigious events in the orthopaedic field: the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) Annual Congress 2024 and the American Academy of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS) Annual Meeting 2024.

The BOA Annual Congress, taking place from 24–27 September in Birmingham, is the UK’s largest gathering of orthopaedic professionals, showcasing the latest advancements in the field. This year’s focus on sustainability makes our research particularly relevant, as it demonstrates how digital health solutions can contribute to more efficient and environmentally friendly healthcare. Meanwhile, the AAHKS Annual Meeting, scheduled for 7–10 November in Dallas, Texas, is a global event for hip and knee surgeons dedicated to improving orthopaedic care. The selection of our research for these prestigious conferences underscores the international impact and significance of our work.

The first study, “Implemented Digital Preoperative Pathways for Elective Surgery: Feasibility, Usability & Fiscal Impact,” has been selected for a podium presentation at the BOA 2024 Congress and will also be featured as a poster presentation at the AAHKS Annual Meeting. This research explores the implementation of LifeBox, our digital preoperative assessment (POA) tool, across all surgical specialities, with a focus on elective orthopaedic surgery. The study not only evaluates the feasibility, usability, and economic benefits of adopting a digital POA but also considers its potential for significantly reducing the carbon footprint associated with traditional preoperative processes. By minimising the need for face-to-face appointments and reducing reliance on paper-based documentation, the digital POA aims to support more sustainable healthcare practices, aligning with broader environmental goals within the NHS.

The second study, “Cumulative Patient Risk Profiling for Lower Limb Arthroplasty: A Large Data Machine Learning Model,” has been selected for poster presentations at both the BOA 2024 Congress and the AAHKS Annual Meeting. This pioneering research leverages the power of machine learning and predictive analytics to enhance risk stratification for patients undergoing lower limb arthroplasty. By analysing a vast dataset collected through LifeBox, this study aims to refine the identification of risk factors that may influence post-operative outcomes. The advanced predictive models developed in this research have the potential to transform clinical decision-making, enabling more personalised and precise patient care. This approach underscores the importance of integrating cutting-edge technology into clinical workflows to improve both patient outcomes and operational efficiency in healthcare settings.

These studies were co-authored with Dr. Frank Davis, Specialised Foundation Doctor; Mr. Joideep Phadnis and Professor Benedict Rogers, Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeons, all from the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, alongside Definition Health’s Dr. Sandeep Chauhan, CEO and Co-Founder; Jan Gosiewski, PhD, Head of Data Science, R&D; and James Farrant-Jayawant, Data Scientist.

We are deeply honoured by this recognition on such prestigious platforms, and we look forward to engaging with the global orthopaedic community at both events. These milestones not only underscore our commitment to driving innovation in healthcare but also highlight the critical role of our ongoing collaboration with University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. As we continue to develop and advance our digital health solutions, we are more determined than ever to push the boundaries of patient care, setting new benchmarks for sustainability, efficiency, and personalised medicine.

Dr. Sandeep Chauhan commented: “This recognition by both the British Orthopaedic Association and the American Academy of Hip and Knee Surgeons is a testament to the transformative potential of digital health solutions like LifeBox. Our research not only highlights opportunities to improve efficiency and sustainability but also reaffirms our commitment to enhancing patient care through innovative technology. We look forward to continuing our work to revolutionise the surgical patient pathway and contribute to better outcomes for patients and healthcare systems alike.”
